2nd Year World Music Composing Project

In groups of between 2 and 6 people, compose and rehearse an approximately 2 minute piece of music inspired by some of the music you have studied.

You need to be ready to perform this in your lesson in week 14 (30th November – 6th December). You should also have a paragraph written in your books describing which countries or cultures your composition is influenced by and in what specific ways e.g. choice of instruments, tonality, rhythm, melody, harmony.

1st year composition project

This is due in your lesson in the week 15 (7th – 12th December).

Use the melody you have already written as a starting point. Compose a short melody, possibly including some sharps or some flats. You need to reflect on what makes a good melody, and compare your composition to these ideas.

Ideally, write out your melody using the Sibelius software in R8 (the password is ‘printserver’), but you can present a hand written copy as long as it’s beautifully neat and on A4 paper. Don’t forget to include your name on the copy, next to the title!

A2 Jazz students homework

Homework due Tue 1st December (A2).

Choose one of the four 1959 albums featured in the radio programme you listened to. Analyse the aspects of the music which you investigated in your presentation (if you can’t remember, then look in the textbook), and also think about the musical context and in what ways the album was influential.

Present your analysis as a CD insert booklet, with a page on each aspect of the music.

3rd Year film music project

Choose a film (any mainstream, appropriate film) and analyse the music, particularly looking out for techniques we have studied, such as leitmotifs, counterpoint and anticipation of subsequent action.

Present your analysis in an attractive and imaginative way. Maybe a DVD insert booklet, or a poster, or newspaper review, or even a cardboard cutout of the character plastered with heaps of information!

The best projects will be presented in a way that makes people want to read them, and will be crammed full of fascinating insights into the way music is used in the film.

Due in the lesson in week 14 (week beginnning 7 December). If you have any questions about what to do, write them as comments below.

Need help with revising for your mock GCSE?

There are 7 pages of terms in the back of the blue book – I suggest you spend a week revising each page starting this week. You don’t need to be able to quote definitions, but you do need to be able to recognize them in music.

There are 5 areas of study. I suggest you focus on a different area each week, reading the chapter and your own notes and making a mindmap. As you read, ask yourself, how could I be asked about this in a listening test?.

Before your examination, you’ll be handing in a composition and recordings of a solo performance and an ensemble performance. These are due before Christmas. Your exam will be a listening test.
