  1. ‘Money’, because of the reliance on musique concrete and the ironic social comment .

  2. ‘Time’ for the use of musique concrete, long instrumentals, electronic sounds, and lyrics with strong meaning
    (‘for yarmite musicians’ oh dear…)

  3. Good idea. Do you think ‘Time’ is in some way representative of all of their output, or just of Dark Side? To decide that, you’d have to think about how (and whether) their style changed.

(Brownie points to Andrew for being the first to start his homework, even if the temptation to include a sarcastic comment proved too much!)

    • i think that their style developed, as all bands style should, but it is still distinctively pink floyd and while Time is part of the album, it still has a significant number of ideas that are that of normal pink floyd
(there was nothing sarcastic about it)

  4. Id agree with “money”, its use of musique conrete is very memorable with the coins dropping, also the lyrics, tinged with irony sing along the lines of greed and flaunting and hoarding money, are typical of pink floyd by being celever and well thought out lyrics, delivered powerfully, and the drummer for pink floyd is in my drum magazine, woooh extra research material.

    • Extra research…? Brownie point for you too! If it’s an interesting article maybe you could bring it in.

Good argument for ‘Money’. So, which Pink Floyd song do you think is the bes, and why?

      • i like money the est aswell, becasue its wuite laid back rock, which appeals more to my music taste than some of the oter songs which i feel overuse synth.

  5. i agree with you when you say about how it sums up the bands development, but surely people will also remember them for there more popular classic songs such as ‘wish you were here’ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXdNnw99-Ic)
and ‘we don’t need no education’ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAe_w9a_IN8) which hardly (apart from synthesiser) didn’t really use many sound effects and were both based around normal music making techniques. I undersrand that maybe they changed to more modern sound recording techniques for different albums, but i still think there songs such as ‘we dont need to education’ is the best.
This however is from an outsider not knowing much about pink floyd, you will probobly disagree!

  6. and jonno, eric prydz did the cover around 2007 :)

  7. yerr i did :)
and i dunno arran, i mean, in english it should be tomato, but there can be many differences in prunounciation. what do you feel on this matter?

    • lols are u http://www.beth? :p hmmm well i feel its all to do with accents, feel a northener(real language) would say “tomato”, but i feel a southener may say “tomaato”, meanwhile scousers wud probably say “stevie gerrard”, it certainly is perplexing

  8. absolutaly arran i completely agree. i wonder what our teacher would say… maybe a comment from http://www.beth? She’s absolutaly our best teacher.

  9. Jack, which song would you pick and why? Answer early tomorrow evening please!

Arran, fair reply, Andrew, would you like to defend PF’s use of synthesized sound? Or do you agree?

  10. Right, now focus, gentlemen! Out of the Beatles and Pink Floyd, who was more important? More successful? More influential?

Although I suppose you could just whitter on about tomatoes on here, and then write up your answers in essay form instead…?

And for the benefit of the chump who posed as me on here earlier, can I point out that you are all of you my favourite pupils. Well, my favourite AS pupils this year, by a long way. I may even make you cakes at some point.

  11. i don’t like quiche

    • How enlightening. I’d like some constructive and intelligent comments comparing Pink Floyd and the Beatles, by the weekend, thank you all.

  12. I feel that the Beatles are more important, more successful and more influential than Pink Floyd. Although Pink Floyd was very important band, they only ever had one number one hit which was I dont need no education, compared to the vast number of Beatles number ones, they cannot be more successful. In terms of influence, The Beatles have influenced thousands of musicaisn worldwide and often cited by people to the reason they took up music, althyough Pink Floyd are still fairly influential, they once again cannot compare to the Beatles. Finally it can be said that the Beatles are much more important, for the impact they had on popular music, and the breakthough of British music into America, and there role in shaping many of todays biggest bands such as Oasis. And this is hard to admit seeing as i hate the Beatles, and I like quiche too, can we have quiche isnrtead of cake?

  13. Good thinking Arran, thank you.

Jono and Jack, can you give some specific examples of bands influenced by the Beatles or Pink Floyd. First person to reply chooses whichever band of those two they want to focus on, and last to comment has to do whichever’s left.

And I don’t think Andrew would be happy with quiche.

  14. Beatles influence – genesis?
    nirvana?
    oasis?

  15. beatles influence – genesis?
    nirvana?
    oasis?

  16. i think the beatles have influenced nirvana, genesis and oasis

  17. Just a friendly reminder… homework on this is due on Wednesday 2nd Dec:

-focus on one song, which you feel is represenatative of PF’s style

-analyse the music, being sure to mention the following:
    —use of voices and instruments
—use of melody, harmony and texture
—move away from a traditional backing group to use of synthesised sounds and other instrumental effects
    —social comment in lyrics
—use of multi-tracking, mixing and other studio techniques to enhance recording

-format = CD insert, well presented

    Start it early!

  18. the best song is obviously dogs and it does typifie their style….mainly cus the whole thing is a bangin solo, the synth solo with the vocals echo, and then the barking…oh lord

  19. I wish I was more like Laura
